SURREALISM NOW! is proud to present, ANDREW OSTAPENKO, an Automatic Surrealist Painter from Kiev! A Surrealist Genius!!!
BIOGRAPHY:
I was born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1982 and spent the first 11 years of my life there.
In 1993, my family immigrated to Canada. For a few years afterwards I was completely engrossed in the dream of materialism, fascinated with money and technology. In a few more years, I began to experience anxiety, shyness and other negative emotions that I had not known before. Realizing that I had become changed by my environment, I began to study spiritual writings and practice meditation. I continued and deepened this practice for many years, while studying Philosophy and Computer Science at the University of Toronto. I was disillusioned by my experience at university after only a few months, but I continued my program for another four years, finally graduating with distinction in 2006. My spiritual practices gave me the strength to continue, and finally culminated in a spontaneous desire and ability to create art. Many changes happened to me throughout the years, and I experienced emotions and ideas of extreme complexity and beauty. One of the reasons I am so drawn to creative expression through art is because these new emotions are too complicated to express in any other way. I often paint paradoxical images because without the paradox I do not feel that I have expressed myself completely.
From the very beginning, I have used the surrealist’s method of automatic drawing and painting. Through this method I discovered my talent. The images come from my unconsciousness, unchecked and uninhibited. They also resonate with the collective unconsciousness and invoke very familiar but forgotten feelings in the sensitive viewers. Most of the time, I do not know what I am painting, but I trust my unconsciousness completely. I just put the paint on canvas without conceiving even so much as the general subject of my painting. I allow my subconsciousness to do almost all the work. Without exception, it always provides me with a greater image than I could have possibly planned consciously.
