                         The Creative Power of Thought

by Rolland E. Proulx

With absolute freedom to create there is also absolute responsibility for what is created.

Most people are oblivious of their thought processes foolishly believing that thoughts are nothing more then just that, harmless thoughts, all the while unaware that the quality of their thinking is creating their reality.  Yet, this dynamic force makes us the greatest architects of our own malaise or the best promoters of our happiness and well being.
Thought precedes everything, it is numero uno, it rules the world and rules our life. Thought is substance, primal energy in action.  It travels faster then lightning speed throughout the universe and determines the quality of our existence and is the cause of all action. Thought is living substance; it permeates, saturates and sticks to everything. It?s alive.

We are constantly making choices, directing our lives according to our beliefs, thought patterns and how we react to what is happening to us on a daily basis. We are all creators creating our realities single handedly determining our future according to the superiority or inferiority of what we are thinking.

Imagine the amount of thought energy that goes into creating a work of art?  The artist saturates, bombards, and focuses a phenomenal amount of thought energy into an idea in order to give it form. Gradually the art object takes on a life of its own and becomes a magnet for positive or negative forces according to the quality of the primal energy (thought) that is poured into the work.

There is something magical about the act of creating. The ability to breathe life into an idea, the aptitude to give form to a thought is nothing short of remarkable. In a sense the artist is the magician, the one who makes the invisible visible through his or her craft subsequently revealing, communicating wondrous worlds of dreams, fantasies, visions, thereby exposing a greater reality.

In these critical epic times a new reality paradigm is slowly coming into being, a quiet artistic revolution gradually birthing, that of the mindful artist, the disciplined conscious creator. The arts are experiencing a progressive shift in consciousness, an epiphany if you will, espousing a new balance: rational mind giving way to an intuitive intellect, the artist as the bridge builder between the mundane and supermundane spheres and the artist as light bringer.
In these exciting unprecedented times we as artist can breathe a breath of positive into a world mindlessly obsessed with negativity. Reality after all is what we make it to be and through the power of our thoughts we can choose to create a world vision that is filled with hope, light and beauty. The choice is ours to make.  Let there be light!

The past traditions of my birthplace are all sentimental and intellectual vignettes of numerous experiences. Having a New England background, I developed a great interest for the local history, the folklore, the poetry (Frost), the mysteries, and the ghost stories. Also influencing me (as well as millions of others) is the pulsation of the entertainment industry. Movies, music videos and television are a dominant force on American culture, more so on today's contemporary artists. The components of the advertising industry: ads, prints, billboards, are designed to entertain as well as capture, lead, and prompt the human psyche. These elements initiate my concept of montage in which I work.

Massurrealism witnesses the present moment as all art movements are supposed to do. Art history is history of our time. Massurrealism, while empowered by the mass media [television, movies, music videos, advertising, etc.] is created through the traditional media [oils, acrylic, collage, photography, etc.] as well as the tools of the new and innovative technologies, digital media, digital techniques and software.

Massurrealism is a combination of mass media related art [such as Pop-Art] and surrealism. The combination of these two main elements became the foundation of this art form. I have been asked how Pop-Art relates to massurrealism. Pop-Art for me, is the same as Mass-Media related art. My interest in mystery piqued my interest in surrealism, and my influences came partially from the Pop-artists, as well as the mass-media. Pop Art presents technology in imagery that we can understand instantly. Marshall Mcluhan stated that Pop-Art is part of the same technological fugue [1], which I believe was the first step of the evolution into New Media art.

Tennessee Williams once said that humanity is just a work in progress. Technology constantly evolves through all media. A new generation of artists are living in this age of mass-media, nuclear devices, genetic engineering, and space exploration. As we pass the year 2000, the new media is combining with the old, and is providing a unique vision into the human condition. •
